Biography

Sarafina McInnis is a fifth-year Honours Bachelor of Health Sciences student at Queen’s University in the Global and Population Health learning track. Her academic path has been supported by the Queen’s University Excellence Scholarship, the Betty Harrison Award for Black Canadian Students and the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship.

She has built her research and volunteer experience around understanding health inequity from the clinic to the community. Volunteering in the Emergency Department at Kingston General Hospital and with the Martha’s Table Community program has sharpened her interest in disparities in access to care and in the different ways that social circumstances shape people’s ability to use health services.

Sarafina began in the lab as a Global Health Research Intern and is working toward a career as a physician-researcher in global cancer equity. Her leadership experience includes roles as Advocacy Coordinator, Third-Year Representative and Sponsorship Coordinator with the Queen’s Black Academic Society, adding community engagement and advocacy to her research perspective.
