NECST - Supporting the National Expansion of HPV-based Cervical Cancer Screening in Tanzania

NECST sits within Tanzania's longer effort to make cervical-cancer prevention more accessible, reliable and sustainable. Its central question is not simply whether HPV testing works, but how HPV-based screening can move from an effective technology into a complete prevention pathway that women can enter, understand and finish. The programme brings together HPV DNA testing, self-sampling, community engagement, provider readiness, referral and treatment linkage so that screening is considered as a health-system process rather than a single clinical event.

The programme is especially concerned with continuity. Reaching more women is important, but screening creates benefit only when results are communicated clearly, women with higher-risk findings receive appropriate triage, treatment is available when indicated and repeat screening is organized over time. NECST therefore links participation at the front door with the service capacity needed after a positive result. It also provides a contemporary platform through which lessons from earlier Tanzanian cervical-screening work can be carried into national expansion.

The wider purpose is to support an equitable transition toward HPV-based cervical-cancer prevention in Tanzania. NECST asks what must be strengthened around the test - communication, workflow, referral, quality, data and follow-up - so that scientific advances translate into prevention that is practical for women and workable for the health system.
