Primary Health Care and Tanzania’s Double Burden of Disease

Primary care increasingly has to manage infectious disease, maternal and child-health needs and chronic disease at the same time. This conference synthesis asked what integration actually requires. Key system priorities included data-driven PHC, financing, community-health-worker roles, workforce capacity, political commitment and integration of chronic disease into historically vertical programmes. The paper positions PHC as the practical platform where multiple needs must be coordinated rather than simply adding one more disease-specific service.
