HIV Burden and the Care Gap Among Pregnant Women in Tanzania

HIV Burden and the Care Gap Among Pregnant Women in Tanzania publication hero

Antenatal care is a critical point for HIV testing and treatment, but strong ART coverage among women already diagnosed can hide missed opportunities among all women living with HIV who enter pregnancy care. HIV prevalence was about 5.9%. Around 71% of women testing positive knew their status; treatment coverage was high among those already aware, but only about two-thirds of all HIV-positive women were both aware and on ART. The analysis separates treatment performance among known cases from the earlier diagnosis-and-linkage gap and highlights opportunities before and at the first antenatal visit.
