HPV vaccination is usually framed as a cancer-prevention intervention. Biologically, that is correct. Operationally, the vaccination encounter may offer something more: a rare point of contact with adolescents who otherwise use health services infrequently. That raises a broader question - can a successful vaccine platform become an entry point for other age-appropriate prevention and health services without making the programme too complex to deliver?
Studies of integrated school-based HPV vaccination in Tanzania have examined feasibility, acceptability and sustainability of combining vaccination with adolescent-health services. Schools can reach large numbers of young people, but integration introduces questions about consent, confidentiality, workload, referral and parent engagement. Stigma research adds a crucial warning: a service can be physically integrated and still remain socially inaccessible if adolescents fear judgement.
Broader adolescent-health integration therefore requires both service design and attention to the social environment around care. Vaccination can be a hub, but it should not become an overloaded catch-all. The science is to identify which additions create value without weakening the core vaccination programme.
