Maternal and Perinatal mHealth in Sub-Saharan Africa: From Feasibility to Scale

Digital maternal-health tools often look promising in pilots. The harder question is whether they become interoperable, maintainable parts of routine health systems. Tools were generally feasible, usable and acceptable, and some studies reported better outcomes or processes, but only one identified tool had reached national scale; interoperability and sustainability planning were uncommon. The review shifts attention from whether an app works to whether financing, governance, workflow, maintenance and data systems can keep it working.
